A great way to kick off the birthday celebrations. Gaze at the wonder that is Camden Valley from a hot air balloon, at sunrise.

Drink in the stunning 360 degree views of the surrounding countryside being kissed by the first rays of the morning sun.

Listen to exciting tales about the history of Camden Valley, as you grab as many snaps of yourself, aiming for the perfect Insta pose, as you can.

If you want, you can ask the pilot to be allowed to assist them in setting up the balloon for flight.

And your birthday balloon trip doesn’t end with the balloon trip. It ends with brekkie at Camden Inn.

Tip: If it’s been raining recently, think about carrying a light jacket along, as the wind may get nippy.

Barefoot bowling, bevvies, and bowlfuls of absolutely delish food. See anything you wouldn’t like to have at your birthday party?

Soak in the party vibes and the vibrant atmosphere as you have a go at the bowling, and then kick back and relax with your craft beer and BBQ wings.

They often have various events (like a ping pong tournament). Keep an eye on their Facebook page for announcements near your birthday.

The staff are said to be welcoming and helpful, including towards anyone that hasn’t bowled before.

Tip: They have Trivia Tuesdays. If your party just happens to be on a Tuesday, you can have a friendly competition with your buds.

Speaking of bevvies, how does a Sydney beer and brewery tour sound as a birthday party activity? Staggeringly good?

Then all you have to do is hit up a tour operator who’s ‘in-the-know’ about Sydney’s craft beer scene, and before you know it, you’ll be brewery hopping along various regions of Sydney ranging from the Northern Beaches to the Inner West.

Gear up for tidbits of Sydney history, washed down with mugs of refreshing craft beer, some of which you won’t get at your local shop.

In case you’re wondering, they have other tours ranging from wines and cheese to gin and vodka and even chocolates!

Every evening, at 8 o’clock, the Observatory hosts a one-of-a-kind experience including entry to the Planetarium and viewing the night sky through a telescope.

Explore space, faraway planets and stars as you learn about various aspects of astronomy. You can also explore some of their exhibits.

Top it up with a walk through their grounds (COVID and other regulations permitting, of course), breathing in the fresh air.

Tip: Marvelling at the wonders of the night sky from the Sydney Observatory is a great idea for a romantic birthday celebration in Sydney. Here are some other birthday ideas that your spouse will love

Note: The Observatory is temporarily closed for ‘heritage maintenance works’ as of May but it’s expected to reopen soon. Please refer to their website for updates.

The Vicar

The Vicar Dural

The Vicar is a bar in the Hills area. So, am I sending you off on yet another ‘let’s meet up for drinks’ birthday?

Well, no.

I am sending you off to an amazing venue, with great interior decor, in the lap of spectacular surrounds, where you can punctuate bites of delicious Italian food with sips of the good stuff.

They have four dining areas:

  • Mrs Goldsmith, the European-styled wine bar.
  • Northside Brisket Bar…well, it’s called ‘brisket’ for a reason.
  • Sports Bar, a huge draw during any games, and…
  • Wakefield’s, a place where you can support local farms and farmers while enjoying meals made from farm-fresh produce.

A great place to meet up with family members and friends on your special day.

If you’re visiting for the first time, make sure you include the prawn linguine and/or the chicken parmy on your birthday lunch menu.

Holey Moley (Darlinghurst location)

Wanna kick putt on your special day?

‘Holey Moley’ is what you’ll be saying when you discover your hidden golfing abilities at this Darlinghurst mini golf course, on your birthday.

Holey Moley is Sydney’s putt putt venue that’s amazingly different. With three themed nine-hole courses over two levels, this will be the perfect way to celebrate.

And when I say ‘themed courses’ I mean everything from Vincent Van Golf (a replica of the famous artist’s bedroom) to The Great Hole-Dini (teeing inside a box full of swords).

And if you do crave a little something extra, head to The Caddyshack – their very well-stocked bistro cum bar.

Finally, if you fancy a round of darts to wrap up the day, head next door to La Di Darts for a little friendly contest with your mates?

The hosts and other staff have been commended for being friendly and helpful.

Pro tip: If you order food, I’d recommend trying out their pizza!

Goros

Japanese themed bar cum karaoke joint cum snack palace…Goros is a lot of things, and that’s what makes it such a great place to mark your bday.

The place that you see today is the result of two rounds of makeover to completely transform the place from the tavern that it used to be. And with the dim lighting, anime walls, bamboo decor and lanterns, I think you’ll agree the new look is pretty spectacular.

Get ready to sink your teeth into some fab food served izakaya style, accompanied by Japanese beers.

Given the crowd and the karaoke booths though, I don’t think you’ll need beer encouragement to belt out a couple of your fav hits.

The staff are quite friendly, but are strict on COVIDSafety.

Tip: They have some really cool fusion foods (like wagyu burgers – a Japanese twist on an American classic).

Instagram tip: A couple of snaps with the Garfields should be a great addition to your Instagram.

Four Pillars Gin Laboratory

Who fancies attending class on their birthday?

You do, when that class happens to be a Masterclass on gin tasting. At a ‘gin laboratory’ by the name of ‘Four Pillars’.

The minds behind cult favourites like the Christmas Gin, the Spiced Negroni and of course the Bloody Shiraz, Four Pillars is THE place to learn a thing or two about gin tasting.

Located in the 1930s Bussell Brothers building in Surry Hills, this gin lovers’ ‘sanctuary’ straddles two floors and has three distinct venues.

You can choose from many kinds of classes, from how to make gin, to mixing up the perfect gin cocktail to of course mastering the art of gin tasting.

If you take the gin tasting masterclass, you can put your skills to the test at Eileen’s Bar (which is on the premises). Prepare to be amazed at the juniper-blue bar as you wait for your gin and finger snacks to arrive!

So, whaddya think? Will you go ‘in gin we trust’ on your birthday?

Pro tip: I hear their Tanlines and Peppered Plum cocktails plus the anchovies on toast are a great addition to a birthday menu.

MANIAX Axe Throwing

A post shared by MANIAX Axe Throwing (@maniax.au)

Stiffening the sinews and focusing your mind to hit the target with your axe is already a great way to mark becoming a year older. You may be older, but you ‘still got it!’.

Your host will teach you the basics of axe throwing, coupled with a few tips and tricks and then it’s up to you to hit the mark. The banter’s good too.

Add to that the fact that MANIAX is located right in the middle of Sydney’s Inner West brewery district, and you’ve got yourself a great birthday deal, right?

What could be a better time to chug on a bottle of beer than right after you’ve proven to yourself and to your family members and to your friends that you’re quite good at swinging an axe?

(of course, don’t make it the reverse – having the beer before throwing axes – I need hardly explain why, do I?)
