{"id":14304,"date":"2020-01-31T05:25:31","date_gmt":"2020-01-31T05:25:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/enterthemission.com\/melbourne\/?p=1831"},"modified":"2024-05-24T17:22:16","modified_gmt":"2024-05-24T07:22:16","slug":"can-you-escape-the-lure-of-melbournes-urban-legends","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/enterthemission.com\/melbourne\/can-you-escape-the-lure-of-melbournes-urban-legends\/","title":{"rendered":"4 Melbourne Urban Legends"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>A child has vanished.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The only person who knows what happened and where the missing child is, is in a coma.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Can you and your team of detectives enter this person\u2019s mind and find out where the child has been taken?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the storyline of an escape game at a premier <a href=\"https:\/\/enterthemission.com\/melbourne\/\">Virtual Reality escape room in Melbourne<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can guess, the driving element of the storyline &#8211; and of the VR game &#8211; is a shocking event that inspires curiosity and stimulates thrill and adrenalin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the same elements that drive urban legends and make their lure so very difficult to escape from.<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are 4 of the best-known Australian urban legends of our home city &#8211; Melbourne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Urban Legends: A Very Short Introduction<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An urban legend is defined as stories that are widely circulated as true and framed as having affected a friend or family member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They will very often contain a horrifying element and are known to thrill and enthral audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/enterthemission.com\/melbourne\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/01\/urban-legends-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1834\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Many urban legends have a universal base, with the details changing from geography to geography to reflect local facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the most popular urban legends are based on<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Secret tunnels beneath the city<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unknown creatures wandering the streets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People being kidnapped from parties, and their organs harvested<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rooms or portions of old buildings (libraries, theatres, and so on) being haunted<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Melbourne Urban Legend 1 &#8211; The \u2018Morgue\u2019 at Crown Casino<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s nothing new for casinos to attract the kinds of persons who shouldn\u2019t be within a hundred feet of a casino, a.k.a. gamblers who don\u2019t manage to keep in control and end up losing more than they can afford to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can well imagine, thoughts of ending their lives do come to some of these individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The legend surrounding Crown Casino in Southbank is that it has a very high mortality rate &#8211; much higher than what presumably would be considered \u2018normal\u2019 &#8211; and that the casino has designed its own underground morgue (Crown Casino Morgue) to dispose of bodies and cover up the alleged deaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/enterthemission.com\/melbourne\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/09\/Crown-Casino-Morgue.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10404\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Does this Crown Casino have a morgue? Yes! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s also rumoured to be a system of tunnels that lead from the casino to various locations where, presumably, bodies can be discreetly transported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third rumour is about specially rotating bathroom stalls that allow for swift disposal of corpses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have you tried out the Crown Casino escape room?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Melbourne Urban Legend 2 &#8211; Jack The Ripper Retired To Melbourne<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Jack The Ripper was a <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/british-history\/jack-the-ripper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">real serial killer<\/a> who prowled the streets of Whitechapel, London, in 1888 and murdered 5 women in horrific ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As if the mutilated corpses weren\u2019t enough, he found other novel ways to terrorize the public, such as the \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/From_Hell_letter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Letter From Hell<\/a>\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the verifiable history ends there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2011, Dr Geoff Crawford (let\u2019s not forget Will Graham\u2019s boss in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hannibal_(TV_series)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Hannibal<\/em> series<\/a> of books\/films is also called \u2018Crawford\u2019) claimed that Jack The Ripper was, in fact, Frederick Bailey Deeming, who settled in Windsor, Melbourne, when he arrived in Australia from England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This may or may not be true; however, as of now, most sources say Jack The Ripper remains an unidentified serial killer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which makes Dr. Crawford\u2019s theory an urban legend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Melbourne Urban Legend 3 &#8211; The Vanishing At Hanging Rock<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While this is not technically in Melbourne, it\u2019s such a haunting, and sometimes believed as true, urban legend that I decided to include it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This goes back to a 1967 novel by Joan Lindsay called <strong><em>Picnic at Hanging Rock<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s about 3 school girls, Miranda, Marion and Irma and their teacher, Miss McCraw, who mysteriously vanished while on a Valentine\u2019s Day picnic at Hanging Rock in the year 1900.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/enterthemission.com\/melbourne\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/01\/hanging-rock-victoria-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"hanging rock, victoria\" class=\"wp-image-1833\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Image courtesy <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrsc.vic.gov.au\/See-Do\/Our-Region\/Natural-Attractions\/Hanging-Rock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\"><em>council website<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The writer, Ms. Lindsay, included an image of what was said to be a newspaper clipping of the time, which would back up the event as true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And she took care to be evasive when people would ask her about the vanishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it is now known that the event never happened, and the newspaper clipping was made up, which makes this one of Melbourne\u2019s, indeed, one of Australia\u2019s most well-known urban legends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Melbourne Urban Legend 4 &#8211; The Ghost Of Princess Theatre<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Melbourne\u2019s Very Own Phantom Of The Opera<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1888 (the very same year Jack The Ripper was active in Whitechapel), Italian-born British opera singer Frederick Federici died of a heart attack while rendering the final notes in his role as <em>Mephistopheles<\/em> in a staging of the opera <em>Faust<\/em> in the Princess Theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, since he had been lowered into the basement (presumably to represent hell) when it happened, and the body had been carried discreetly to the green room, the remaining cast was unaware of his death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/enterthemission.com\/melbourne\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/09\/Ghost-of-Princess-Theatre.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10405\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So, they would claim that he had been present among them when they were taking the bows (which happened <em>after<\/em> the time of his death), which set off the urban legend of a phantom wandering the hallways of the Princess Theatre.<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is your opinion on the urban legends in Australia?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Can you resist the allure of these 4 urban legend Melbourne escape room experiences?
